The United Kingdom and Switzerland Are Rejoining Erasmus+
From 1 January 2027, the United Kingdom and Switzerland will once again participate fully in the Erasmus+ programme. This will create new opportunities for student and staff mobility, international partnership projects, and activities in the fields of youth and sport.
The United Kingdom Returns to Erasmus+
The United Kingdom left the European Union on 31 January 2020 and withdrew from Erasmus+ at the end of the same year. The British government replaced it with its own mobility programme, the Turing Scheme, which did not offer the full range of opportunities available through Erasmus+.
The several-year absence is now coming to an end. From 1 January 2027, the United Kingdom will once again participate in the Erasmus+ programme.
Switzerland’s Return to the Programme
Switzerland has not participated fully in Erasmus+ since 2014. In a referendum held that year, Swiss voters supported restrictions on immigration. The result conflicted with the agreement on the free movement of people between Switzerland and the European Union.
In response, Switzerland launched its own student exchange programme supporting cooperation with EU Member States. From 1 January 2027, however, the country will once again participate in Erasmus+.
The return of the United Kingdom and Switzerland opens up new opportunities for people interested in educational mobility, gaining international experience, and cooperating with institutions in both countries.
